Matt Madden’s first graphic novel, tells the quiet story of the dissolution of a relationship and its effects on a small group of friends in Austin, Texas in the winter of 1998. Morgan, a fun-loving barista obsessed with a French television show, and his hard-working med-school bound girlfriend, Shirin, are made for each other, or so it seems to even their closest friends. But through no one’s fault, they seem to be growing apart. Meanwhile, Lance suffers from writer’s block, from a bizarre condition called "word lice" and from a serious crush from afar on Morgan. Madden weaves together the lives of these and other complicated three-dimensional characters who come from varied cultural backgrounds and sexual preferences without ever resorting to stereotype or cliché. Madden’s formal experimentation and international perspective, the hallmarks of his past work, are here but employed in a more subtle, casual manner. His explorations of the comic art form always serve to enhance the story, never at its expense.
