Harvey Kurtzman created the publishing sensation MAD and in 1956 could have played his strong hand into a lucrative equity deal with EC publisher Bill Gaines. Instead, he bolted from MAD to join another 1950's publishing sensation, Hugh Hefner and Playboy. Hefner provided the format and big budget that Kurtzman had dreamed of.
